Book Review – DRAGONFLIGHT ~ Anne McCaffrey

Paperback, 299 pages
Published July 26th 2005 by Del Rey (first published 1968)

To the nobles who live in Benden Weyr, Lessa is nothing but a ragged kitchen girl. For most of her life she has survived by serving those who betrayed her father and took over his lands. Now the time has come for Lessa to shed her disguise—and take back her stolen birthright.

But everything changes when she meets a queen dragon. The bond they share will be deep and last forever. It will protect them when, for the first time in centuries, Lessa’s world is threatened by Thread, an evil substance that falls like rain and destroys everything it touches. Dragons and their Riders once protected the planet from Thread, but there are very few of them left these days. Now brave Lessa must risk her life, and the life of her beloved dragon, to save her beautiful world.

I actually started the series on a dare I gave myself to read something outside of my norm. I was quite surprised by the book. Although it’s one of those books that is classified in our library as sci-fi/fantasy/YA.

The book was well written and the plot was well followed. I found Lessa very believable and loveable. However the one issue I do have with the book is some of the terminology and wording was something even as an adult I had issues with and had to actually look a few up. My only issue with the terms and words used is that if I as a 40-something year old adult and have issue with some of the words… as a young adult or even a teenager I imagine those words I had issues with would be troublesome for them as well. But over all I do recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, dragons, sci-fi.

I am currently reading book #2 DRAGONQUEST
